About the Scholarship:
The Horatio Alger Scholarship is one of the nation’s largest need-based scholarship programs for high school students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, and a commitment to pursuing a bachelor’s degree. More than 600 scholarships are awarded each year — with awards up to $25,000.

Eligibility & Requirements (General Undergraduate Scholarships for Juniors & Seniors)

Who can apply:
• High school juniors and seniors in the United States.

General requirements include:
• Enrolled full-time in high school; juniors must be on track to graduate with their class and seniors must be graduating in the current academic year.
• Strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited nonprofit college or university in the U.S.
• Demonstrated financial need (family adjusted gross income thresholds are part of eligibility; often around $100,000 or lower, but some scholarships within the program may reference lower income levels).
• Perseverance and overcoming adversity — applicants must describe challenges they have faced and how they have worked to overcome them.
• Involvement in co-curricular and community service activities.
• Minimum GPA typically 2.0 or higher (requirements vary by specific scholarship).
• U.S. citizenship is required.

Counselor involvement is required as part of the application process — typically through a Counselor Certification Form confirming academic information and sometimes other details about the student’s record.

Application Deadlines for the 2025–2026 Cycle:

The application period this cycle is as follows:

• High School Seniors: December 1, 2025 — February 15, 2026
• High School Juniors: December 1, 2025 — March 1, 2026

In addition to the student application, counselor and support provider forms are generally due shortly after the student deadlines (e.g., within a few days of closing) — e.g., counselor/support forms due by February 20 (seniors) and March 6 (juniors) in this cycle.

Applications for the 2026 UH Future Nurse Academy Are Open

A Message for UH Caregivers from Michelle D. Hereford, MSHA, RN, FACHE, Chief Nursing Executive, Ethel Morikis Endowed Chair in Nursing Leadership

I am pleased to announce that applications for the fourth annual UH Future Nurse Academy are now open. Once again, we will host three distinct UH Future Nurse Academy sessions, each with a class of 25 students, in our east, west and central regions, drawing students from across Northeast Ohio. Over the past three years, more than 2,000 high school students have applied to take part in this immersive program, and approximately 80% of the nearly 200 graduates of the UH Future Nurse Academy are enrolled in nursing school programs or plan to do so after they graduate high school.

We are opening this opportunity to our caregivers first. Do you know a Northeast Ohio high school student entering their junior or senior year in the fall who is interested in the exciting profession of nursing? Encourage them to visit our website and fill out an application. Applications are due Feb. 19 and space is limited, so don’t delay.

About the Academy

The UH Future Nurse Academy will build on the student's existing talents, skills and gifts to prepare them for healthcare careers beyond high school. Students are nurtured with the thoughtful support of UH clinicians and partners. The two-week program includes visits to area college/university’s schools of nursing as well as local UH facilities. Students will also be introduced to well-being techniques and will learn different nursing skills with hands-on experience.

2026 UH Future Nurse Academy Program Details:

When: Monday – Thursday the first week and Monday – Friday the second week; 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Where: Three locations (students will attend only one):

- East: June 15–26, Lakeland Community College
- Central: July 6–17, UH Management Services Center
- West: July 20–31, Lorain Community College Ridge Campus

Support: Students will receive healthy meals each day, all materials needed for the program and transportation to attend all offsite events.
DEADLINE: Applications are due before midnight on Feb. 19, 2026.

Medical Mutual due by 3/15/26 5pm

We are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Medical Mutual Scholarship Fund for Customer Schools. Through this program, seniors graduating from Ohio school districts that carry Medical Mutual insurance are now eligible to apply online for a one-time $1,000 scholarship toward college tuition. Additionally, six top applicants across the state will receive a $10,000 award for their outstanding academic and community service efforts.

Below is a brief outline of the required materials and application process:

Rita Matteo Memorial Due by: 3/12/26

Please encourage community-minded students with at least 150 service hours to apply. Detailed instructions and eligibility can be found here. Our application is entirely digital this year, reducing the workload for counselors (since the applicants and recommenders will be sending in their materials directly).

Additionally, while academics play a role in our selection process, the primary focus of this scholarship is community service; if a student has contributed to their community, we want them to apply, regardless of their academic record.

Cleveland Foundation Scholarship Due By: 3/17/26

The general scholarship eligibility is: 2.0 GPA and US citizen or eligible non-citizen (generally including students with refugee or asylum status). There is eligibility for students from CMSD, inner-ring suburbs, Cuyahoga county, and beyond!

JFSA Scholarships various due dates

The JFSA (Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland) offers scholarships and grants to Cleveland area students who are degree-seeking and attending four-year accredited college programs in the classroom.

Applications are now open and close on April 1^st. Please have your students visit our website to see if they qualify and to learn how they can apply:

The majority of our opportunities are for students who identify as Jewish. However, we do have two scholarships that include students of all faiths (non-Jewish students can reach out to me via email to see if they qualify). Please share our program information with your students, where other scholarship opportunities are listed for high school seniors. Please also share this information where parents would be able to see it.

I've attached information about our program as well as a flyer for the Ruth Weltmann Begun Memorial STEM Scholarship. This scholarship is for academically superior Jewish female students pursuing a degree in STEM, and the generous awards are $12,500 per year.

Please note that we offer scholarships for middle-income households too (family income maximum approximately $225,000, with awards up to $5,000). Applications for this scholarship are processed on a competitive first-come, first-served basis for students with a 3.0 GPA and higher.

Various Backpack Fund Scholarships

We would be grateful if you can help advertise these scholarships to your students. Many of them have incredibly broad eligibility - simply graduating from a Lake County High School and attending college in the fall. Many of your students will be eligible for these opportunities and we’d love to receive as many applications as possible!

You can find links to the individual scholarships on that page, but as you share links with students, we think using the link to the scholarship homepage would be best because it would drive attention to all of the scholarships rather than individual ones. The due date, scholarship amount, eligibility, application questions, and the link to apply are all listed on the individual scholarship pages.
