• What is International Baccalaureate?

McKinley has been  officially AUTHORIZED to offer the Primary Years Program as an International Baccalaureate World School! As the first IB World School in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties we are proud to offer this prestigious program to our school community. The PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subjects areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry. The PYP is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculum and provides a superior foundation for students as they move through their education in Fairport Harbor.  We look forward to working closely with our stakeholders, parents, students, and teachers to develop our shared vision of a better and more peaceful world, achieved through inter-cultural understanding and respect.

5 Essential Elements of the IB - PYP Curriculum

In the PYP a balance is sought between acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, development of conceptual understanding, demonstration of positive attitudes, and taking of responsible action.

    • Significant, relevant subject matter that we wish students to explore and know about.
    • Powerful ideas that have relevance within and across the disciplines and which students must explore and re-explore in order to develop understanding.
    1. SKILLS
    • Those things the students need to be able to do in order to succeed in a challenging world.
    • Dispositions, which are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs, and feeling about learning, the environment, and people.
    1. ACTION
    • Demonstrations of deeper learning in responsible behavior through positive action and service; a manifestation in practice on the other essential elements.

PYP  (Primary Years Program) This is the elementary branch of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom.

Inquiry Based Instruction- Inquiry-based Learning includes teaching methods built on students' individual knowledge and interests, and emphasizes learning how to learn and how to find out, using both traditional and contemporary media. Each teacher has the mandate that the learning within their classroom must be engaging, relevant challenging and significant.

    Transdisciplinary Learning -

A Transdisciplinary approach focuses on the inquiry or process through the lens of all disciplines.
